On Wednesday, President Donald Trump issued the \u201cAddressing Threats to the United States By The Government of the Russian Federation\u201d executive order, hiking the established tariff regime from 25% to 50% on India, given its \u201cdirect or indirect importation of Russian Federation oil.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The White House\u00a0<a class=\"sc-fpSjgX hgJfeE\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/fact-sheets\/2025\/08\/fact-sheet-president-donald-j-trump-addresses-threats-to-the-united-states-by-the-government-of-the-russian-federation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">explained<\/a>\u00a0that these actions were taken as the president considered that \u201cIndia\u2019s importation of Russian Federation oil undermines U.S. efforts to counter Russia\u2019s harmful activities,\u201d and that this behavior \u201cfurther enables the Russian Federation\u2019s economy to fund its aggression.\u201d The new tariff will be effective 21 days after August 7 if Trump does not change his mind on the issue, as has happened many times before.<\/p>\n<p>The Indian government rejected these actions, labeling them as \u201cunfair, unjustified, and unreasonable.\u201d India\u2019s Foreign Ministry stated that it was \u201cextremely unfortunate that the US should choose to impose additional tariffs on India for actions that several other countries are also taking in their own national interest,\u201d vowing to take actions to protect its economy and markets.<\/p>\n<div id=\"custom_html-59\" class=\"widget_text td_block_template_1 widget widget_custom_html\">\n<div class=\"textwidget custom-html-widget\">\n<div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Brazil, whose exports to the U.S. are also paying the same tariff percentage, is mobilizing to coordinate a joint response by the BRICS bloc, of which India is also a member. President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva told Reuters that he would call India\u2019s Prime Minister Narendra Modi and China\u2019s President Xi Jinping to tackle the issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to try to discuss with them about how each one is doing in this situation, what the implications are for each country, so we can make a decision.
