Ghana’s SIM re-registration will transition to a digital platform in June, implementing automated verification and online citizen enrollment to expedite and streamline the sign-up process, eliminating the need for physical queues.
The Minister for Communication, Hon. Samuel Nartey George (MP), unveiled this initiative during a visit to Margins ID Group (Intelligent Card Production Systems) in Accra today.
The Minister explained that citizens will register their SIM cards online, reducing the necessity for physical visits to registration centers. The automated verification system will minimize manual processing times, enhancing the efficiency and accuracy of the registration process.
This streamlined approach will save citizens time and improve the overall registration experience. With the June launch imminent, citizens anticipate a hassle-free SIM card registration process.
Background of SIM Card Re-registration
The SIM card re-registration exercise commenced in 2021, necessitating the re-registration of all SIM card holders using their Ghana Card, the national identity document.
Previous Challenges
Low Registration Rates: Millions of active SIM cards remained unregistered, prompting the government to extend the deadline on multiple occasions due to insufficient registration figures.
Data Security Concerns: Concerns regarding data security and the potential for fraudulent registrations via the mobile app were raised by some Ghanaians.
Government’s Objective
The government’s objective is to address these challenges by implementing a digital SIM card re-registration process that enhances efficiency, accuracy, and convenience for citizens.
The government aims to:
- Enhance National Security: Reduce fraudulent activities and crimes facilitated through unregistered SIM cards.
- Improve Industry Regulation: Ensure accurate data on valid SIMs for better industry regulation
